Criminal

  • Court of Appeal: successful appeal against a pre trial ruling of the High Court in a murder case whereby a defendant’s admission of his intention to kill his son in a motor vehicle accident was ruled unreliable and therefore inadmissible. This resulted in the murder charge being withdrawn and replaced with a charge of manslaughter, to which the client pleaded guilty.

  • Court of Appeal: A successful appeal against a pre trial ruling of the District Court in a sexual case that allowed severance of two batches of charges.

Sport

  • Sports Tribunal: A finding of no fault following an athlete returning a positive test for cannabis.

  • Sports Tribunal: A successful application to have the Canterbury Bulls qualify for the final of the NZRL National provincial Competition instead of Counties Manukau who played an ineligible player.

  • NZRU Judicial Committee: One of the many cases brought before the NZRU Judicial Committee following Drug Free Sport New Zealand’s investigation into the use of performance and image enhancing drugs by amateur sportspeople. The player in this case was a 17 year old schoolboy.

  • High Court: An application heard on a Pickwick basis by members of the Kaikohe Women’s rugby team for an interim injunction against a decision of the Northland Rugby Union to remove their team from the Northland Women’s club competition.
